A covey of Huns, about 20, startled 3 1/2 month old GWP yesterday in the high grass on the edge of the lawn. He thought about running back into the yard, but turned back and got a snoot full of scent for a few minutes. Actually, they startled me, too. More of that to come in Canada in a couple of weeks. Earlier, the older female startled a rattlesnake. I wish it were later and cooler.
On the ptarmigan, I have hunted them several times. Sometimes they don't fly much as "man" in new to them early in the season. Somewhat near the bottom , table fare wise, of all the game birds, at least in my experience.
