What means clean breech face? No markoff from setback? You'd think there'd be some with a gun "worn smooth" with use but I know nothing of Brit hammer doubles. What's wrong with it, JoE?

Gibbs was a respected provincial gunmaker. The proof marks are metric so the reproof was within the last 20 years. You would want to make sure the chambers were 2-3/4" when the gun was proofed because if the chambers were lengthened afterwards, the gun is no longer in proof. The worn checkering means the gun has seen a lot of use. The Jones underlever is considered a less desirable feature and the gun should consequently cost less than the equivalent top lever gun. To me it is a classic back action hammer gun of very good quality. All purchases of guns of that era are a risk, because any break down can cost you a significant portion of you purchase price. Good luck.

Jack what I meant by clean breech face, no bad pits and clean firing pins and holes.

John I'm aware of the undesirable Jones underlever but I've shot one a bit and I kind of think they are neat..I make fun of my friends I call it a bumper jack.
I've saw a few for sale but they were steel barreled and I wanted Damascus. From the pictures Lowell it looks to be some fine Damascus.

John what leads you to believe it was proofed before the chambers were lengthend....it's marked 70mm.

I'll be darned. I thought the underlever mech had some appeal to the antiquarians; guess not for propping up price.

Jack I hope it checks out.
It should be here Wednesday, I might have to buy me some Edwardian garb.

John I'm still currious why you believe it was proofed 'before' the chambers were lengthend....it's marked 70mm.

BV2-OQ6.5-CC4 = $2250

OQ6.5 is comparable to between a second and third level BLE or a first and second level BLNE - not unrealistic. OQ4 is heavy use bun no abuse - that looks OK as it is still showing a tad of CC. Stock finish and barrel color are much easier to renew that CC.

The Jones UL seems to be OK, giving away only a bit of price to toplever guns and nothing to snap underlever type guns. The damascus pattern is one of the more standard grades - a higher grade gun would have a much finer pattern. Stock wook looks good, but would be better for a higher grade. Modest engraving speaks of a modest grade gun. If it were an OQ5 grade, it would be $3600 in level CC4. I think it is priced close to right for what it is.

Hj - now, you and I both know that you know what this means, so don't gimme that dumb hillbilly routine.
