I have seen Ed the Torch's guns on gunbroker for years and have always thought he was a hack for ruining as many guns as he has. This place to me has always been a source of real knowledge from people who really know what they are talking about. Somehow Ed put down his torch and found us, and really lowered the knowledge base here. He's a hack, and a shyster period and we all should just shun him. Do we have an "ignore" button on our user controls? I suggest that if we do, we all use it. I don't think he will go away as he likes the attention good or bad, kinda like an ugly stripper, but if we don't have to see his posts it will be a better place again.

Play safe Ed, don't burn yourself.

At the top of the page, click "User List", click the alpha character of the perons name, find the name in the list that pops up, click on it, find "Ignore this user" and click. Done.

After reading all of these posts I've come to the conclusion that Krylon should come up with low temp case color in a rattle can. sick The colors have almost all worn off of my guns from years of honest use. They will stay that way and my pride in them will certainly not be dimishished because of it.

rhd: i been sellin used guns for fun and profit for about 30 years now. during that time i have learned among other things, what sells and what does not sell. and also, who pays retail and who does not. i do what i do based on what works and does not work. my primary goal is to maximize sale prices in a given environment. i never continue a practice that conflicts with my primary goal.

once a gun reaches my hands, it's about money...

I wonder what you would do with a black powder Colt with historic provenance and no finish...Maximum profit comes from unmolested guns that sell to knowledgeable and discerning buyers.

I do not remember exactly where I found the information, but it comes from the factory instuction manuals to the workers in the repairs department. It stated that from time to time customers might send a gun in due to wearing of case colors. Their method of "restoring" or touching up these colors was by irregular application of a cold bluing solution with a Q-tip.
You don't much more "low heat" than that.

I did not see anything mentioned about torches though.

Not to beat a dead horse here and make this terrible thread go any longer then it has to, but I believe this "trick" is right out of Ithaca's 1970s, maybe even 80s, Warranty Repair Manuals. My parents gun shop was Ithaca warranty for years and I still have all the old manuals, they are great for reference today.

This method was developed mostly in response to Ithaca-Perazzi owners complaining about their tiger-striped cyanide case colors wearing thin from handling their guns on the clays fields. I cannot recall if the method required the use of a torch or not, but I want to say that it did because you needed to heat the action before applying the cold blue.

I have never actually seen the process done because it was a little before my time, but I can recall my oldest brother saying my Dad did not like the process because it almost always rusted after it was done because of the cold blue (even after re-lacquering over it) and it just looked like sh*t to begin with. In my opinion there is no good way to touch up case colors, bone charcoal or cyanide. The actions have to be properly cleaned, polished, annealed, and re-cased using the historically correct method that was used by the factory when the gun was first built.

I have read about this over on Shotgun World I believe. It was applied with a torch. As I remember the thread the Ithaca Perazzis were not case hardened. They were made out of a steel that does not require it, like the Winchester Model 21s.

Best,

Mike
