As far as I can tell, and I've read them all, Gordon MacQuarrie has no peer as far as US outdoor writers. Ruark, Buckingham, and Sheldon do run a close second.

I really like the short piece by Rutledge... "Why I taught my boys to hunt". I read that one about once a year...

if any one has a copy of fergus's "a rough shooting dog", re read the chapter beginning on page 69. this is a hunting senario from four perspectives. it is my favorite piece of bird hunting literature.

who wrote the short story "pocono shot"? it is also one of my favorites.

Worth Matthewson's "Big December Canvasbacks"

Sir Joseph Nickerson's "A Shooting Man's Creed"

Both modern books.

John Taintor Foote was a great writer of shooting and fishing stories. A bit whimsical at times but deftly written. Dumbell of Brookfield and Pocono Shot come to mind - both fascinating stories.

I feel sort of irnorant reading all these book threads smile

Gentlemen, if I may ask... if you recommend a book and happen to know where one can get a free download of it (most classics are common property, aren't they?), could you post links, too? Thank you smile
