Hi:
I would like to know what is a good adhesive to attach ebony for ends to a stock.
I do not want a glue line to show when completed.
Tia,
Franchi

I've used everything from elmers to epoxy. Make sure to dowell it on and use a long furniture clamp from the top of the butt to the front of the forend tip. Make sure to not let the tip get in a bind when tightening the clamp or you will get an uneven glue line. Pretty straight forward. Hope this helps.

The last ebony forend tip I reattached I used Brownell's two part epoxy. I mixed in their black coloring powder until it looked like the tip.

I think Brownells Acraglass regular would work just fine. More important, have the fit just right before you glue up. I'd try for a joint that looks good without any clamping, then use minimal pressure. If there's a line showing during fit up, it'll probably be there after the adhesive sets.

I've had good success with Acraglas, but I've come to prefer Gorilla Glue because it's easier to work with.

Acraglass Gel died black. Ebony can be a bit oily, I "degrease" the joint end with acetone.

Ditto the acetone, but you don't have to use Acraglass from Brown-give-me-all-your-money-ell's. Slather the dowels up with any decent epoxy, clamp like Joe said, and get on with life!

I've used gallons of epoxy for wooden boatbuilding, as well as gluing ebony to stocks. Most folk try and get the joining surfaces too smooth. Epoxy forms a mechanical bond (albeit at a microscopic level). Sawn or coarse sanded surfaces are best. Prime the surfaces with the mixed epoxy before you put in any filler/colouring. Graphite will give you a nice black colour. Epoxy is a handshake reaction (as opposed to a catalytic) meaning you must mix it as exactly as possible and very thoroughly.

Being another old wooden boat builder myself, I'll second that. (Our epoxy usage was measured in 50 gallon drums)

Dowel rod is a must. Once you drill a hole in the tip for the dowel, drill a small hole in the barrel channel perpendicular to the dowel hole. Example: If you drill a 1 inch hole for the dowel, Drill the small hole 1 inch frm the surface to be glued. This will allow air to escape when the dowel rod is inserted into it's hole. This will keep the air from compressing and splitting the tip. Do this in the stock barrel channel as well. A small amount of glue will squirt from the "breather" Use a pair of heavy duty wire cutters on a small nail and make a two pointed sharpened pin. About 1/2 inch long. Drive the pin into the stock on the surface to be glued. When you are ready to mount the ebony tip, after applying the glue, use a hammer and tap the tip onto the stock. This will keep the tip from rotating once mounted. The dowel rod will act as a guide. Acetone is a good idea as well
