If the spring will stick out of the knuckle with the cocking levers removed (it will on a Rem 1894), you can put everything together with the springs forward and then use a vise to push them into position until they snap into the hammer notches.

It goes snap in both barrels!!!

There wasn't room to move the main spring forward with the cocking levers removed. I figured out a system that worked pretty well.

Starting with the cocking levers in:
Place the main spring in position.
Put the hammer in place over the spring and under the cocking lever.
Compress and stake the hammer in position with a 3/64" brass rod.
Insert the trigger sear, stake in place with a 1/8" brass rod (just under the pin size).
Cock the spring and hold with the trigger sear.
Remove the 3/64" brass rod.
Move the trigger sear to control the fine positioning of the hole in the hammer.
Stake the pin on that side. Repeat for the other side.

I'm sure there had to be a simpler way, but this was the first way I found.

Thanks for all the help.

Buy and then go to W. Ellis Brown's "Building Double Rifles on Shotgun Actions".( ISBN 0-9714802-0-6)There it is,the actual sketch for a "standard" takedown tool page 44. I made one and the problem is solved. In addition other tools are presented (even if you are not building double rifles).

Leather protected spring compressor:

I used it to fix a Víctor Sarasqueta sidelock and it worked quite well.

Just an idea.
