Mike- Seems like I remember some time back one of our cousins commenting about water fowl guns being nickle or chrome plated as a deterent to corosion. Could this be one?

Cary anything is possible but, if I took it after waterfowl I'd at least paint the chrome to dull it down.

RTF, the first few minutes of my 18th birthday was spent on the yellow footprints at MCRD in July 1974. Hard and harsh but I have many fond memories of my time in the corps.

Drill Pigs; don't you just love 'em. But we had proper discipline in those days and couldn't the youngsters of today just do with some of that!
I have a Lang wildfowler with a nickel plated action but that was done back in 1881 by Langs so I guess that is o.k.

Back in the mid-80's, I attended a gun show in Gainsville, GA where I observed a Crown Grade LC Smith SBT that had, not only been chrome plated; but had it's vent rib barrel bobbed to 27" and it's beautiful stock shorted to about 12" and a Morgan adjustable pad added. As there were only 88 Crown Grade LC Smith SBT's ever produced, it was a "bargain" at the asking of $1,200. Especially given the fact that when it resurfaced at another gun show in the late 90's with a new adjusted asking price of $3,300. Thus far this is the only chrome plated SBT I've come across.

Another piece of history ruined. How sad. Seems to me like I remember seeing a chrome-plated Francotte somewhere this past week.... maybe the folks who did this to these two shotguns are related.
redoftx That was over at 16ga Society. They concluded that somewhere, a pimp was missing his sxs. That, or it was a cruise-ship trapshooting gun, plated to protect against corrosion. I can see as "reasonable" that some of the older sxs might be nickel-plated. In the late 1800s, nickel was a new wonder metal and plating something with it would not have seemed out of the ordinary because of its corrosion-resistance properties. New, wonder materials get used for stuff we a couple decades later are repelled by: Everett Garrison, one of the masters of bamboo fly rod-making, used plastic reel seat inserts in some of his rods in the 30s and 40s. Plastic was the new wonder material at that time, the ultimate of high-tech, etc.

Up until last year I had a very early AE Grade Fox that someone chose to have galvanized. It sold, I believe to the TIN MAN.
