Tony,
Bone charcoal is used in water treatment plants. You may be able to find a more local source for it.

Pete Thanks for the tip Pete. I do subcontracted survey work for my local Water Company which is one of, if not, the largest Water Co's in Britain. Enquiries will start tomorrow. It must beat paying Ł33.00 for a small pail of it, which is what it's been costing me. Harry

Tony, Great pyrotechnics for effect. Appreciate your contribution to the board to share your craft and the finished product. I'm going to try that deal tomorrow, the sidewalk is hot enough to melt metal and the horse trough is close enough. What a great look to the case color. Ya done good. Keep the photos and dialogue coming. Randy

The idea that the Marlin video is not genuine because they wanted to "throw competitors off the trail" is utter nonsense. Back then color case hardening was widespread and every factory color case hardened parts. It was not the lost, "black art" that it is today. I'm certain that the video shows the process exactly as they practiced it.

I had heard/read that there is bone charcoal in a product used for growing roses. You are supposed to put some in the hole before you plant the ball. Not sure if this is adequate for doing bone charcoal case hardening or not.
Max liked your site, very nice work.
