I'm very skeptical of stamps post 1911/1912 that aren't in the metric system. I would say those stamps were applied on the import side of the weapons trade. Regarding a German inland double with 70mm chambers, I would expect to see 70mm on the flats: [/email] This is an export market version but displays the non-default typical inland 70mm stamp. Raimey; Again not disagreeing with any of this. My only point was (& is) that it is the lack of other markings & not the fact the nominal gauge is in a circle that would likely denote the gun in question to be chambered 65mm. My gun is of ca 1901 vintage & was an export model. It has neither a date code or Nitro Proofs. I cannot say with certainity if the 70 was stamped in the extractor by Sauer, the proof house or by VL&D but unlike the example Larry cited mine is in metric rather than 2 3/4".

The Germans certainly made plenty of guns for export: Charles Daly, and a lot of Sauers going to VL&D and their successor, A&F. Mine being an A&F import, it's hardly surprising to find "2 3/4" stamped on the gun. Chokes are also stamped. But there were far more important things that often separated German guns made for export than various stamps. For example, far less likely to find a cheek piece and sling swivels on a Charles Daly, or a Sauer made for VL&D, VL&A, or A&F, than on a gun made for sale in Europe. Also much more likely those guns would carry scroll engraving rather than the typical Germanic deep relief game scene.

My VL&D/Sauer does have scroll engraving. It also has a check pad. The old leather cover has some splits in it & what it appears to be is a piece of cork was inlet into the wood & then covered with the leather. It is a possibility this was added later, but is not a lace on or anything of that nature, being let into the wood. It also has the appearance of having been there for a "looong" time.

Interesting tube stamps on the August Schüler 228xx of W(or M), RW and F.A. on the lower rib. F.A. looks to be one of the August Schüler "go to guys' post WWI/The Great War till about the mid 1930s. Many of the upper rung Charles Daly German sourced offerings had the F.A. initials. Alos there's some initials in the left hand corner of the image I can't make out. Kind Regards, Raimey rse

mto7464 gives that the initials are "GT"; maybe one of Gottlieb Triebel's descendants? With several subcontractor's stamps on the tubes all must have been very busy which resulted in many hands involved in the manufacture of this sporting weapon or other examples may have the marks and they are just masked by the lower rib? Kind Regards, Raimey rse

got my shells today so took her out to the range. Got some polywad vintager and spreaders to try. First impression was ouch. I had my face down on the cheek piece way too much and this thing is so light it smacked me pretty good. Kept my face up on the next few shots and was much better. Patterned well with the vintagers and opened up a lot with the spreaders. I think the vintagers will work good on doves and the spreaders on quial (if we had any). Looking forward to dove season.

Does the 16/1 always indicate an oversize bore? I have seen it on various European guns.
