For whatever it may be worth concerning the Vintagers' fall off in attendance, most of that is due to the much friendlier and accepting attitude of the Southern SxS in Sanford, NC in the Spring and the Fall event in Georgetown, SC.
Bill Kempfer in Sanford and Rick Hemingway in Georgetown put zero emphasis on Edwardian attire and most attendees there couldn't care less about the Anglophilia dress. They just put their emphasis on having fun and providing a superb venue. Southern Hospitality has no rivals.
The Southern SxS has become THE sxs and vintage shooting events for both sxs shooters AND the fine gun vendors and buyers. JR

Gentlemen, I think we may be over re-acting about this one. Let us give SCI a little slack, are they deliberately trying to sabotage the Vintagers? Is there not room for both? IF you like genteel English attire and fine guns of the vintage years you will go to Pintail Point. IF you have been to Pintail and want a change you will go to the EPIC it's a simple choice. If the EPIC is a miserable failure, at least they tried and you may have been there. Maybe a vintage gun does not interest you and you only want a modern 'Best' well it to me is obvious which event you will attend. But don't admonish someone just because they do not share your interests or views, it would be a strange place if we were all the same. To the organisers of the EPIC, I wish you all the very best but you may have made an epic miscalculation. I hope I am wrong.

Salopian, I won't comment on the "sabotaging the Vintagers" part. However, as far as sharing views with someone else, I agree 100% with the officially stated view of your British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC): "To oppose any unwarranted changes in the use of lead shot unless sound scientific evidence . . . shows such changes are needed to protect wildlife, the environment or human health." The restriction on lead shot at EPIC does not appear to fit that description.

The best united front for shooters is one that unites against unreasonable restrictions on lead. I have nothing against those restrictions--where they have a sound biological/environmental basis. (Like shooting into water or around marshes or wetlands. I have no problem switching to nontox when I hunt pheasants in such places, for example.) But if we don't take a stand against UNREASONABLE lead restrictions, we're allowing more and more of that camel--who already has not just his nose but most of his head--inside our tent. And we're making it easier to admit the entire animal, which would be an eventual total ban on lead shot.
We've already won some significant victories in this area. Thanks to Congress, the EPA cannot regulate lead in ammunition. Right there, that's the 800 pound gorilla off our backs. That leaves only the USFWS to deal with at the federal level. And because their charter runs only to what happens on federal land or to migratory species, they've largely already regulated everything they can regulate (except doves, which may well happen). And just this year, at the state level, Montana, Iowa, and South Dakota have rejected additonal requirements for nontoxic shot--which shows that if we pay sufficient attention and make sufficient noise to our politicians, further unreasonable bans on lead are not inevitable. Let's keep fighting!
KB, what would be reasonable restrictions? I am not against fighting but lets just say that this is not goverment intevention. This is a private matter. I say either go and shoo tor vote with your feet and your wallet at the other venue. I am not baout not opposing shot restricitons. I personally feel its flawed science, along with global warming, climate change, elvis sightings and transfats . let the consumer decide. in the market place. why are lead bans around marshes okay but not on rivers? last I knew lead sank and birds/fowl didnt eat dirt. Yes pheasants and grouse among others will gather stones for their crops but i hardly feel the elad issue obverall is any thing other than an attempt to plactae the environmentalists. Sort of throwong a child form the sleigh being chased by the wolves. I think you mistook my initial position for one of caving . Far form it. I just think that the shooters can decide and so can the promoters. If the Vinatgers made "Dandy garb" mandatory, I wouldnt attend. They dont so I do. To each his own.

I have some rather lengthy e-mails from Marty Fischer concerning this issue. I would like to post a link to them, but do not know if I would be compromising my privacy by posting the link. Would someone more knowledgeable about these things please advise me on this? I would be posting a link to my actual email page with these correspondences from and to Marty on it.
They contain what I think would be some interesting information about this matter, if anyone's interested.
