can anyone tell by the proofs if this is good for smokeless? Is it worth $350? There is one small chip out of the forearm (you can just see it in the side picture) and I am not sure on the chamber length http://s562.photobucket.com/albums/ss63/mto7464/Aug%20Scheler/

the proof is e. german suhl inspector mark since 1950. it looks like a good buy for 350. [crown over u]

This shotgun may have been a bring back from wwii. i think the proofs are older german proofs.

August Schüler Model 1(A&D) with the early pin type cocking indicators from 1912 - 1923 with Nitro proof. Sounds like a deal for a shooter if the inside of the tubes doesn't look like a bombed airstip.  Kind Regards, Raimey rse

There was some marks there but from what I could find they were assembly marks, if that makes any sense. Had a pic somewhere but I can't find it. I asked him to take one, might be a day. Any other ideas on if its smokless or is it a grey area with these older proofs.

The 16 in a circle indicates 65mm (2 9/16")chamber length. If it were 2 3/4" it would show 16/70. Most German guns of that vintage have 65mm chambers. It is good to check the chambers with a gauge to see if the chambers have been lengthened.

Roger The number in a circle is simply an indication of the gauge. I have a Sauer from the 1930's with 20 in a circle, and it's factory 2 3/4"--so indicated by "2 3/4 shells" stamped across the face of the extractors, and verified by Griffin & Howe records. The 16/1 on this gun indicates a slightly oversize bore from the factory: .669 rather than the 16ga standard .662.

Larry is right. I have a VL&D/Sauer from around 1901 which has a 12 in circle with a 70 stamped into the extractor face with 2 3/4" chambers.
That said the odds are this one does have 65mm (2 9/16") chambers. Also realize that even with the Nitro Proof, it was proofed to CIP specs, NOT SSAAMI.
