Hi, I dont have any spanish guns, but a La Sorda? Under Over was on the shelf at a local gun shop today. It looks well used, but has lovely engraving. I counted 10 pins on the sidelock. Are these the bad steel spanish guns I have read about? or could this be a nice thing? I can get pics tomorrow if anyone is interested.

I for one would love to see pictures. A make (if it is that) that I've never even heard of. The only Lasorda I know is an Italian-American friend; could it possibly be Italian rather than Spanish? (I realize La Sorda is Spanish also).

Gentlemen:

"Sorda" is a local name (northen Spain) for an european bird almost identical to your woodcook.
Other names for the same bird are "becada" and "chocha perdiz"

I think "La sorda" is probably a model, not a brand, with short barrels and cylinder chokes. There are even some barrels with rifle cuts to open as much as posible the shot charge to hunt this bird in dense woods at very short distances.

I hope this explanation helps a little.

Best,

Thanks for the lesson, Jose. Interesting; I had a whole different meaning for "sorda." Which made NO sense in this context.... I've seen French and Belgian guns made for hunting "becasse" (sp?) which are "rifled" in one barrel like you describe.

Becasse is Frenchie for "woodcock"--them smelly snail-eaters love guts and nuts of wild game served on toast points, snails, frog legs, tripe, sweetbreads (brains) and tongue-- If my grouse dawg won't pick up a dead woodcock and retrieve it like he might a Sir Ruff- then I ain't wastin' any powder on shot on them long billed "bog suckers"-- La Sorda-- Tommy- Italian National league Baseball mgr- (LA Dodgers)don't think he's a shotgun man however-

Ok so now I have the gun at home to try it out. I am really confused about where the dealer got "La Sorda" - I cant see it anywhere.

Here are the pics up close with an SLR. You can see the REAl name in one of them.

Roy,

That is one of the Sarasquetas that were/are around trying to ride on don
Víctor Sarsqueta's coat-tails.

Apparantely some of the other Sarasquetas were able to turn out one or two good examples.
I do not know about your widow and her sons.

JC

P.S.: Sorda o becada (Scolopax rusticola):

Hi, JJ Sarasqueta (Widow & Sons as JayCee said) made low to mid grade guns. I'm not aware of any best grade guns made by them. This maker in general was a notch below Victor and a notch above Felix. There were a couple other Sarasquetas, but all small makers.

As with all Spanish guns, you have to judge the gun.

IMO, the engraving is typical of a lower end Spanish gun. Nothing complex nor that well done.

But as we all know, engraving does not make the gun go bang. It may well be one heck of a gun.

Best of luck to you!

Greg
