Not really. A router table set up with a round nose bit or a mill set up with a ball-end end mill.

My thought was to have the 1899 carbine stock I have used as a duplicator pattern, wouldn't that take care of all the contours including the forend grooves. I thought filling the handguard properly would be more difficult.

Ok guys, let's see pix of your "easy" grooved forend when you get around to making them. Best, Steve

Did it twice many years ago on WWII era un-grooved Springfield stocks when doctoring them to use on early '03's. I used a router table and with a fence, and a round bit. Lowered the stock onto the spinning bit with the upper edge of the stock against the fence and pushed it ahead to the stopping point. A little work with fine sand paper to blend the ends and edges and Voilá. Rifles are long gone or I would post a pic. One couldn't tell them from arsenal original save the lack of inspector's stamps.

I must be missing something. What is it that makes the finger grooves desirable? Unless you are restoring one to its original military configuration. And if you are doing that today, you can get someone to fake the inspector's stamps.
