Sounds to me like dove season down there is a war zone. Do they make blaze orange kevlar?

I ingratiated myself to the president of a hunting club I had just joined by repairing a dent in the barrels of his 16 "guild gun". He had left it on the roof of his car and drove home for a hunt. Didn't find it until the next weekend.

Sacrificing a broke rib to protect your barrels is pretty strong, but really does not seem to me to be in the same league with stepping in front of a low shot-string on a dove shoot to keep the barrel dings at bay. It especially hurts when someone forgets to get rid of that old turkey load from the Spring before the dove season opener in September...Geo [/quote]

If the gun is in your hands when you receive the incoming mail, how does the barrel get hit without you getting hit?? I thought old Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger were pretty good, shooting guns out of peoples' hands. Tricky, only hitting a barrel with a shotgun pattern.

JRB, I guess I better explain southern dove hunting a little better. There are two kinds of dove shoots; the local affairs where someone gathers up some birds and invites a few 'regulars' for some afternoon fun, and the pay shoot organized by a promoter for $100 to $150 per gun.

At the local shoots where everyone knows everyone else, safety prevails, kids are taught proper gun manners, and your barrels don't ever get dinged. The big pay shoots, usually around opening day, attract mostly serious hunters, but also a few of the local idiots. Its the idiots and their teenage idiots in training you have to look out for. The promoters usually do a great job of spotting the idiots and getting them off the field before they hurt somebody.

No, we don't wear Kevlar orange vests on the dove shoots. That would only give the idiots a better target. At least with good camo there's a chance they won't see you well enough to ding your gun barrels...Geo

I guess George that I'm used to hunting up here where it is waaay less populated. We have a dove season but I think it is more of a practice session for the real season---pheasant! Nothing can beat creamed pheasant and dumplings with huge slices of cooked Vidalia onions spread over them. Now you have me drooling on my keyboard.

I've been to a few dove shoots, but none that dangerous. When a low bird comes over, everyone shouts "Low Bird!" You're going to get sprinkled with high-angle shot, of course, but none of it dangerous.

Dove shoots with lots of people keep the birds moving. It's fun.
