Apparently, with Greener, there were as you say, grades of "Best" guns. The one on Gunbroker was very much like the one in Australia.
A 50-guinea gun would be about $16K today?

He may not hide behind his screen name but our village idiot is rather obnoxious. For some reason he feels the need to attack anybody he sees fit on here and is allowed to do it time and time again.
All I can say is jOe must have some pictures of the moderators with a goat in a compromising position. I cannot see how he has been allowed to remain here as long as he has. Good question...you should ask yourself why you remain. I guess I'm still here because I don't act like a child and call people names or slander them like you and others continually do on here.

There is a gold guinea coin, I have one, George III, date is a bit fuzzy, mid 1700s. It is not the same coin as the sovereign. George III is best known as the British king who "lost the American colonies" Mike

I have to kinda agree with Joe...It looks like a lovely , fine, high grade Greener gun, But I wouldn't call it a "Best" Greener either. Unless Mr Graeham(Sic?) Greener said so...did he?? No offence meant...its a lovely Gun Franc

The original post says that Mr G Greener said it was a Best gun, only bettered by the Royal grade... So I guess it could be classed as One of the Best?, 2nd Best? I give up! I would love to have one like it , anyhow jOe just says what he thinks to be true..either deal, or ignore if you don't like it, I guess. I think he is often pretty much right on in his opinions though. all this said in a friendly voice, n no harm meant to anyone franc

Funny this topic would surface right now as I’m currently researching a high grade Greener …as a matter of interest Vic Venter’s latest book “Gun Craft ” contains a wonderful chapter on Greener’s G guns, it is said that Greener himself thought of these as his best work, only a handful of his best craftsmen were allowed to work on them. Great reading .…specially for anyone with interest on Greener “ Best” guns.

Franc and others. Maybe it depends on the period as to what grade was highest. Lots of makers worked in that manner. Around 1900, the G60 Royal , and the G 70 Imperial , were topped only by the Presentation Grade. In these designations the 60 of G 60 would change over the years as the same guns cost more. Similar on G 70. A guinea was just a bit more that a pound. At that time the Royal would have a gold Crown on the top lever, while the Imperial would have a gold Crown with a gold Sceptre. This general discussion relates mostly to the Greener boxlock, rather than sidelocks.
Graham Greener's book lists the Grades as follows for Best guns as he describes them.
1855 to 1889------ Upper [Best]40, 36, and35 gns--Middle [Best]34 gns--Lower [Best] 31 gns
1889-1894---------Upper [Best] 60 gns, Medium [Best] 55 gns, Lower [Best]50 gns
1893-1903-----Upper [Best] Presentation 85 gns, Middle [Best] Imperial 70 gns, Lower [Best] Royal 60 gns
The list goes on for Grading from 1902-1965
Most guns after 1902 seem to be marked with the grade such as G70 for Imperial [G ejector gun], but prior to that many are not grade marked. I have No. 49,007 which is a 1900 made Monarch Imperial, but has no grade marks. Greener's records confirm the grade and note the half dozen workmen that completed the gun as the same workmen who labored on the Imperial G guns.

Stallones, I would assume your beautiful gun is an extractor gun. Is that the case ?
