That's troublesome to be sure Tony,I've layered very, very thin slice's of matching wood ,glueing and clamping each one.... with good result's,but sometime's you may have to stain (which I'm not fond of )

It will work though.

I hope it work's out,

Chris

You don't suppose that someone bent some cast off into the stock in times past and that the sideplate might just bend back into place and fit the wood, do you?...Geo

I guess it's possible but it's definately wear and tear by the looks of things.

Would this be the path of repair if one (as I am) were faced with the problem of badly done and deeply cut checking? Or is there another approach?

Thanks

Berrien, you mean around the rear of the lock the wood has got very sharp along the edges? Because I'm new at this particular type of repair someone else will be better versed I suspect. But I'm just applying more wood to the area, a small piece from inside the lock area, and then glued it onto the thin area...then I'll rub down...it might fail...but we'll have to see! I'll put more photos up as soon as I have something.

Tony

I was simply looking at your problem of needing to build up the wood and thinking about a problem that I have with one of my doubles wherein someone butchered the checkering at the hand (pistol grip stock)-- doing it badly and with very deep cutting -- and I was wondering if this addition of woods via thin strips would be a reasonable corrective strategy.

Best and good luck on this project and on other matters.

Tony,
Try grindinging down the inside edge of the lockplate so that the plate is thinner around the edges.

Hi fellas, got the barrels and action back from the barrel chap today...wow...these have really been recovered from the brink...terrible pitting and one side out of proof...just...so..after mastery work, tightening of the action, back through proof, ribs re-laid and both barrels bored out some more they are back...I'm truly amazed...I had written this little gun off....now for the final strike up and blacking...

It's coming together...oh and I got the barrel engraving re-picked whilst I was at Price street... smile Gotta love that place...just tremendous people...

I'd see if I could set the lock plate in a little deeper...I'm no expert, just a thought.
