I have a 1930 Western Arms Ithaca 16 with 2 9/16" chambers. They are very much like a Nitro.

2Holer,

Am I mistaken to believe that US guns made after 1926 were standardized to 2 3/4? Or was 1926 when SAAMI was organized, but not implemented?

Dates on chamber sizes being standardized are all over place. I know L. C. Smith kept 2 9/16" on 16 ga until mid 1939. Others would have to chime in on SAAMI.

2-holer is correct. The changeover to 2 3/4" as standard was not done all at once by all American gunmakers. And as a matter of fact, it wasn't even done all at once by individual gunmakers in all gauges. As of 1940, per my Shooters Bible, there were still far more shotshells available in the old, shorter lengths for the 12, 16 and 20 than there were in the "new" (and by then nearly universally standard, at least in the US) 2 3/4" length.

The NID period Ithaca catalogues begin showing their .410-bores chambered for 3-inch shells and their 16-gauges for 2 3/4 inch shells in 1934. Prior to that 16-gauges were catalogued as chambered for 2 9/16 inch shells. The very first (1926) NID catalogue shows the 20-gauge chambered for 2 1/2 inch shells, but in that the 1925 Flues Ithaca catalogue shows the 20-gauge as 2 3/4 inch I think that may have been an error.

Savage didn't start stating "chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells" in their A.H. Fox catalogues until 1938.

Other than thanking Vets, your comments are useless drivel, which is not at all unusual.

Your welcome.

That's interesting. In McIntosh's book on the Fox, he stated that at some point after Savage bought the company, any Fox returned to the factory for work would automatically have the chambers lengthened to 2 3/4". I wonder if Savage started chambering new Foxes at 2 3/4", and so marked the barrels, prior to that catalogue reference. Comments, from owners of Savage-era Foxes??

This is getting way off Walter's original post. I have Fox guns in my collection that were shipped as late as 1938 that don't have the chamber length marking on the left barrel, but all those I have that shipped in 1939 and later do.

That business of rechambering to 2 3/4 inch and proof testing at owner's risk before any repairs would be done is from Fox repairs/parts lists I got from Savage in 1966 and 1968. Don't know when they actually started that practice. Also, between 1966 and 1968 they ran out of Fox-Kautzky single selective trigger parts.
