The high federal taxes on ammo were put in place in 1937 to fund land purchases for wildlife and public hunting. The law was ammended in 1970 to allow the funds to support public shooting ranges and hunter safety courses.

Yes there are some local efforts to tax hand gun ammo but the thought that the price hikes were seeing are secret gun control efforts are just conspiracy thoery for the guys that wear aluminum foil hats.
