I have a sxs 28 ga that shoots a little (1/4 to 1/2")right with left barrel and quite a bit more (3/4 to 1 1/2") left with right barrel at 7 yards from benchrested position. What can be done to bring its barrels into proper regulation? Who would you recommend for this type of work?
Thank you.

Dave,

I shoot Rio and WAA 7 1/2, 3/4 oz, but because of the short distance (7 yards)(edited previous post) I was able to approximate the deviation. At 10 yards the difference is even more obvious. The gun is choked quite open and the pattern opens up quite a bit at longer distance.
Thank you for your help.

Here is a site that can help. Bob Day did one impact correction job for me and I was happy. http://www.americhoke.com (562)923-3608. Call him and discuss what you are seeing as a problem.

First, shooting from a bench rest will throw the regulation off. I would expect the gun to cross fire from a bench rest.

The proper method is with a standing rest. Since they are not widely available use a pair of shooting sticks with the proper hold. The gun must not touch any part of the rest, your body must be free to recoil. Try this before you say the regulation is thus and so.

Also, proper regulation distance for shot guns is 30 yards for 410 and 40 yards for all gauge sizes. It's not a rifle, don't expect centers to be within a half inch at 40 yards.

Unspellable,

I thought of that, too. While I did not use a standing rest I did shoot it off hand and the RB shot again too much to the left. Moreso, when I shoot Right crossing clays I always miss with the RB and more than not brake them with LB.
The chokes are quite open and I might get too thin a pattern at 30-40 yards to make an approximation on POI. But I would expect a deviation present at 7-10 yards to be amplified that much more at longer distances.
After all I would have to try it, but I doubt the shot will turn around.

I'm not sure you have a regulation problem here. You have a POI vs POA issue that should be curable with stock adjustment. If I understand your post, the barrel POI are separated by not more than an 1 1/4", more likely by 3/4". Now that sounds like the distance between the barrels and that both barrels are shooting exactly straight ahead. If you were to give your stock about 3/64" cast-on at face, I think you would bracket the POA with the each barrel about 3/8" to its outside. Since the barrels seem to be firing straight ahead, I think the separation will not increase with distance, or at least not very much.

You should be able to tape on a face spacer of 3/64" to 1/16" and test this out pretty quickly. If the spacer works and doesn't mess you up on vertical adjustment, then you can keep it, get a better one, or have the stock bent.

Rocketman,

The LB shoots pretty straight while the RB shoots to the left. Kind of crossed and only at 7-10 yards. The farther you go from the muzzle the larger the barrel's POI difference will be. I don't think it's the stock fitting improperly.

If they are crossing at 7 yards (I reread your post and see that is what you said), then you do have a regulation problem and that is a ribs off fix by a barrel maker, probably. You might get some out by excentric choke grinding, but you said it is already open. Sorry. Give Kirk Merrington a call and discuss.
