I have seen more than one Sterlingworth field grade and NID field grades that have checkered cheeks. Some said it was after market. Another said he thought it was an extra that could be ordered when the gun was made. And some said it was done to hide wood checks. I have an NID with checkered cheeks and there are no hidden wood checks. Sterlingworth http://gastatic.com/UserImages/3870/995770238/wm_2476175.jpgWhat say you?

2, It looks to me that your photo shows two (2)possible cracks on the lower right where the receiver and wood meet. I don't believe that checkered cheeks was ever factory on a STW. Bob

Thanks Bob. No cracks, just finish cracks. I've had the stock off and did some preventive Acraglassing.

I boughta Beretta 682 ou that someone had tightened the stock so much that the wood was raised & split on the left side. Wenig refit & checkered both sides to conceal the repair & it turned out beautifully. Actually improved the looks.

I had a Parker VH 16 gauge that had the exact same thing. Looked original to me, but nobody else thought so.

Sure looks to me like I can see a pin covered over in the Sterlingworth cheek checkering. We have certainly seen in the Parker Bros. order books where lower grade guns were ordered with cheek checkering and higher grades that normally had it were ordered without. Same in the A.H. Fox Gun Co. graded gun production cards. The Sterlingworth was a "stock" gun made to "stock" specifications. Any change was extra cost, and quickly got one into the price of an A-Grade where grip choices, and stock dimensions was part of the deal.

The answer I am looking for is; was the checkered cheeks a factory option for the NID field? It looks like so for the SW.

Checkered panels were done by some makes as a matter of course some on higher grade guns .Bonehill is a good example along with horn inlayed points. As was the fashsion for in let "sideplates" It is a good way to hide a stock repair ,so if the maker did not checker panels as a norm have a good close look . As a matter of note on the subject of stock repairs ,it is not un common on a boxlock double rifle to see a pin and diamond or bush through the head. This is not a repair but was done at point of manufacture as a reinforcement to prevent the stock from cracking. But again look carefuly to see that engraving matches.

About the only way to prove the originality on a Fox or Parker is to order a letter. No letter, not original. Rather common on D and C Grade Parkers. I have seen four or five that were lettered as original and have seen a couple of more orders for such guns but have not seen the guns. I own one Parker DH with original checkered cheeks. Parker's checkered cheeks are recessed and are not usually faked in the proper style. One notation in a Parker Brothers order for a D Grade is "Check sides of stock same as $200 gun.".

It does not look like a factory professional job.The 2nd -3rd line from the to has a line off and the bottom, back checkering does not go all the way to the border.
