Well, I took the trip because I could not stand it any longer. Just got back and I am thinking the barrels are cut. Right barrel measures .729 and so does the choke. Left barrel measures .735 with the choke at .712. Light but definite pitting in both barrels but it would not make it unshootable I think. Both barrels have been backbored probably to remove some pitting (and probably the choke too). I am starting to get cold feet on this one but I would like to present some photos to get opinions. So rip away, please.

It is an unusual gun! Very nice but as you say the barrels need looking into. The price is too high for a wall hanger. david

Builder, a very unusual gun; the so-called "clamshell action". The Germans never used that term, they called it an "action stabil". It was mostly used on double rifles and I wonder if the gun may have been made with a pair of rifle barrels to go with the shotgun? The condition is, sadly, a bit rough but it is a very unique Sauer.

Good shooting,

Is that the safety lever on the left side? I have a Nimrod boxlock drilling with that same typ of saefty and it's not too easy to work.

Hey Recoil! Missed you at the CT show. Spent the AM with Yeti. Nice guy.

Nah, its the cocking indicator. There is one on each side. It has a conventional safety slide on top.

Hi Builder,
that is a neat looking gun and I understand the attraction to it as I have the the same afliction. The one thing that concerns me is the barrels. They look cut, only way to tell for sure is with proper guages. But if the barrels are cut I would pass, anything can be fixed but the barrels (unless of course you do the Briley flush choke tubes which would add 600 or so I think) neat gun but check the barrels

I'd say for sure the barrels were cut. I've never seen a Sauer that had anything nearly that crude as the finish of the muzzel. In the picture it also looks as though the front bead is epoxied in place. I'd also check to see if the chamber has been recut. That said it looks like the rest of the gun is typical high quality Sauer work.

As I said in the PM to builder. This gun interests me because I picked up a Sauer 2 years ago that someone had actually filed off most of the "clamshells". The rest of the gun is in good shape. The barrels are 32" full and fuller and good shape. So I'd be interested in it just to get one of the 2 back to a nice and shootable condition.
