Hold the gun in the horizontal position with the forend off, trigger on bottom. Hold the action and try to wiggle the barrels in the horizontal plane, if they wiggle then the gun is off face. Same gun position and try to wiggle the barrels up and down. If they wiggle the gun is loose.

It is possible for a gun to be:
*off face but not loose.
*loose but not off face.
*loose and off face.

Often putting a gun that is loose and off face on face will cure the loose problem too.

Best,

Mike

There is a difference between a gun that is loose and one that is off te face. Some guns are "loose or slack in the boby from the day they were made but rely on the forend to keep them tightand when the bolt closes they are fully sound. A gun that is slack in the bites is a lot worse as the wear rate will increase rapidly.
As to all this about shims ,why not just put a new joint pin in ,if its removeable?

gunman I was taught and since have always checked for looseness and off-face with the forend off. What brand or type of action requires the forend to be on to test for these problems?

It is possible for a gun to be:
*off face but not loose.
*loose but not off face.
*loose and off face.

Thanks,

Mike

As I think about it I believe that antimony was the alloy I was thinking of for the 95-5 solder. There were some old silver solders (Hard Solder) which contained Cadmium, but as Chuck said they have been outlawed for some time now.

Lead free solders.
Yes I was referring to the kind sold for plumbing nowadays. However, even the best lead free solder is crap for some applications. Particularly for printed circuits in critical areas, ie. cruise missiles and similar devices where malfunctions can be disastrous. These problems have been showing up in parts sourced in Europe where lead has been banished from the workplace. Gee, I grew up drinking water from lead pipes, learned to make sheet lead flashings and was still pouring lead joints on cast iron pipe as late as the sixties. Oh, come to think of it, maybe THAT'S why I'm so stupid.

I made some lead and oakum joints as an adolescent. Caulking irons, pouring rope, propane furnace. My father owned an HVAC and plumbing company. Then there was wiping lead, lead solder, soldering sheet metal flashings, lead shower pans, lead in the faucets, I have about 30 pellets of lead #6s in me from a pheasant hunt in 1982. Maybe all the lead is the root cause of my IQ deficiency too!

They used to make the oakum from hemp and some of the old plumbers smoked it. They couldn't pass the drug test if they did it now.

Best,

Mike

Hemp doesn't contain any controlled substances. The leaves of the hemp plant do, however. (THC) Smoking oakum or hemp will only give you a bad taste and a severe cough.
