Hold the gun in the horizontal position with the forend off, trigger on bottom. Hold the action and try to wiggle the barrels in the horizontal plane, if they wiggle then the gun is off face. Same gun position and try to wiggle the barrels up and down. If they wiggle the gun is loose.

It is possible for a gun to be:
*off face but not loose.
*loose but not off face.
*loose and off face.

Often putting a gun that is loose and off face on face will cure the loose problem too.
