Micheal do you know of this Alaskan hunter? I have a National Rifleman from February 1948 with an article about his hunting and the rifle he used. A Winchester 70, custom stock and barrel. Chambered for 220 Arrow. There are some great pictures of him hunting in this article.

Hosea Sarber was a well known hunter, guide and worked for the game commission I believe.

Wrote some articles and was friends with Jay Williams and Whelen among others.

Because of his unique name he is easy to Google.

I'm not sure if it was him or someone else but I have a picture of a early hunter in Alaska sitting in a dory with bald-eagle claws about a foot deep in the bottom of the boat.

MP, that whole photo album is fascinating, thanks for putting up the link.

I found something else on "Hosey":

I think Sarber disappeared in the woods or maybe his empty boat was found. Unknown what happened.

I seem to recall reading in 1959 of the discovery of Sarber's remains & that of a large bear. The bear died of gunshot wounds & Sarber died from the bear's attack. The article said that an 1886 Winchester, cal .33 WCF and an S&W .38-44 Outdoorsman revolver were found with the remains. The rifle's magazine was empty and the cylinder of the revolver had 6 empty cartridge cases in it. It was one of those "use enough gun" articles found in the adventure magazines of the day.

Waterman, are you sure of that recollection? Sarber was a bolt action man, an 86 would have been out of character.

MKB, 1959 was a long time ago. I remember that I was out of high school (graduated in 1958) and a voracious reader of things about Alaska and hunting. And that I read the article before I joined the Navy in 1960. I already knew Sarber's name. I think it was in some magazine like "True" or some such. Whether or not the article was factually correct is anyone's guess.
