As a deceased friend of mine used to say, " ... back when the Army still wore brown shoes."

How many men did those shops employ? And how many rifles did they make over the years? I know about making a payroll every 2 weeks. How did they keep the doors open during the depression?

You just have to love the collars, ties and vests....and not a pair of safety glasses anywhere. Its a wonder that more people didn't hang them selves or go blind.

The machines are lovely. Michael thanks for sharing and please continue if you can.

I recall that Harry Pope had a serious eye injury that affected his ability to work so they were taking a chance back then on permanent damage .

Great old photos. Very interesting to look at! I guess the concept of safety in the work place was still foreign!

The machine shop photos remind of a friend's shop in Flat, albiet his was on a much smaller scale. It was well outfitted though with steam power and the machines were all belt driven-cool to see!

The man at the front looks a lot like a young Joe Dubiel. Joe was a good friend of mine when he worked at Ranger Arms Co. in Gainesville, TX. The hairline and facial features really look like Joe. Possibly it is Joe's Dad, who worked for Hoffman.

The Hoffman picture was taken in 1923 and it's my belief that the man is John Dubiel.

I would agree. John's son, Joe, looked just like him.
