Rem40- the blinds that we hunt out of have a shelf that this can sit up on, so im not too worried about wrecking it. This one wont be riding in the bottom of a jon or anything.

Market- you are absolutely right, and if worst comes to worst and it gets all dinged up, sand a little and put on some more Tru-oil!

I couldnt find anything that was blued, or even plain steel, so i had to order the nickle plated stuff and built a reverse electroplating set up to take the nickle off so that the the Brownells would blue the metal. I thought about brass as well, but liked the idea of blued steel better

I thought about a free floating pannel, but the wood was 3/4 inches thick to start with and it took quite a few times through the planer to get it down to 3/8 ( dont have a band saw to re-saw it)Igetting it thinner to make a floating lid would have been nice, but i didnt want any set back on the lid to collect water/snow, dirt ect. Im not too worried about cracking as it started as walnut flooring that was kiln dried, but i guess only time will tell....

I built a similar box for my fly-tying kit. To eliminate the possibilty of insect critters getting into my fur and feathers, I laid up red cedar strips intended for cedar closets, then built a series of trays for all the tying debris in the box.

i checked out Rockler too, but they are so D#!mn expensive. meisel hardware had the most resaonable prices when i looked at the all in cost of shipping, currency conversion, ect. plus Meisel is a small town company, nice to support the little guys.

You have a lot of talent! I can make gunstocks from scratch but not a great box like you did! Bobby

Needs a handle. The old ones had a V-shaped piece of wood on each end with pads in the Vs to hold your gun, as well as a strip of wood below the V to use as a handle. Either way your shell box looks way better than my rusty metal GI surplus ammo box!...Geo

Keep in mind that this thing is only like 10 inches wide, it only holds 18 shells. make sure you scroll to the right to get an idea of the scale. It is small enough to put in your blind bag. I thought about a handle, i have some really nice dark brown bridal leather i got from the J.W. Hulme co. ( i love their gear!!) that i could use, but the farthest i imagine this thing traveling outside a blind bag is about 3 feet from the bag to the shelf in the blind, not really enough to warrent a handle. plus i couldn't bear to drill into that beautiful burl.

I have plans drawn up for a trap range box that will hold something like 200 shells. That one will be made of oak, possible canvas covered with leather corners, but probably finished similar to these.
That one wont have the individual shell spots, but divided compartments wide enough to stack rows of shells in, and then a strip of canvas under it to lift the shells up to loosen them, kinda like a battery compartment on some electronics. That box will most definetly have a handle as it will be about the size of a briefcase.
