Didn't Jim Thorpe die by drowning in a mud puddle? Or was that just what Burt Lancaster, who played him, acted out because the director thought it was a dramamatic way to end the movie?
Wrong Indian. Lancaster did play Thorpe in "Jim Thorpe, All American". But the famous mud puddle drowning was Ira Hayes, Marine vet and one of the Iwo Jima flag-raisers. You're probably thinking of the movie "The Outsider", with Tony Curtis as Hayes.
"Call him drunken Ira Hayes, he won't answer any more, not the whiskey-drinkin' Indian or the Marine who went to war."
