Capt. Curl has nailed it (as he has so many great guns!)

Winnowing through the American hardware store gun detritus at the local shows;
Expaining away the lengthened chambers and bogus colors; fending off the "who did the rebluing?" parrys from the bottom feeders;
A tired but in-proof, whole and intact London Best shines like a diamond as one combs through the rest of the litter there.
Bust the move and write the check; the odor of history is there as you open the lid of the oak & leather case for the first big whiff. I'm getting closer all the time; I'll treat myself soon!
Ah, the smell of the Circassian; the roar of the Rangoon Oil!

You hit the nail on the head! The very reason I took the plunge. That and the fact that they put up with a 14 year old Wally 28 years ago who wrote them a letter about their guns. The hon. Richard Beaumont was nice enough to write me back the nicest letters which have encouraged me to this day to someday own one. I have never forgotten that small kindness.

Ortolan! what you say is true.
Most shops have the Parkers and the likes that have seen hard times and hacksaws.
Then you see the tire and worn London gun - which by the way, has not seen the work of the workman's trade - they shine like a jewel.
Trouble is, they are 20x the price of the bashed up Vhe.

For goodness sake! Take a brand new VHE and compare it to a brand new Purdey game gun. Is that a comparison of apples to apples? Heck no! Where is your head, man? 20x would be a low multiple of this comparison.

Really, if you want to enjoy ownership of a Purdey game gun you have to pay reasonably for it.

If all you want is a VHE, then you can have the VHE and pay for your mother's operation. You'll still have money for your Polident even then.

Gun has a lot of color for a gun with modified forcing cones and a broken lock spring (is that what they were describing?). Does the hinge screw area look funny? I would still like to look at it. I can't quite read the serial number on the charge label. It looks like it may be 23,000 series? Is it possible to document the odd barrel length at Purdey on short notice? Oh, well, I think I'll just stay home Saturday.

Purdey will reply to you pretty quickly but you have to keep in mind the time zones. That gun does seem to have "issues".

No I didn't erik - nothing shows-up!
Curl, some of the really good VHE's go for 8K and up, so your a little off base on your pre-enjoyed Purdey multiple.
Four or five of them little cuties, for a great Purdey hmmmm!
