Would someone please post the list of British proof marks and their associated dates. I need to ship an antique (post 1889) shotgun and need to be able to show the postal people some type of proof that the gun is truly an "antique".
Thanks in advance for any help.
Steve

We have lots of serial numbers for the oldies. Give us the make and serial number and we can probably find the proper list.
I have shipped many pre 1898 shotguns thru the USPS and never have to show anything as they are non-firearms. Only the modern
ones have to have the two forms to show them.

Stallones,
Thanks for the offer, but it's a guild gun. I have a proof marks book but the damn things packed away and is presently unavaliable to me.

I am surprised the USPS is asking for proof of the status of the gun. I have shipped with them before with no proof required, only a declaration of the contents.

It all depends on the post office and how knowledgeable the clerks are. The worst I've experienced is the PO in Naperville, IL they refused to ship guns period, I battled with them for awhile and even tried to get the head clerk fired but to no avail. Usually there's no problem, but you never know so I like to be prepared.

You will only be able to get a before or after date from proof marks of that period. Before 1904. Before 1896.After 1875.I do know from personal experience it is not posible to date a gun on proof marks alone, other details may be factored in to get to a closer date.Would need full detail of gun to do that.

My Post Office makes me sign some form (which is completely innappropriate to the situation) when I mail a gun, but they've never asked for proof of pre-1898 status. I would think only the BATF&E would be interested in that, since the Postal Regulations specifically allow mailing of long guns, antique or modern...Geo

I have had the PO folks call the postmaster to verify that I could ship a shotgun without FFL to a repair facility. If a particular facility is giving you grief go above them - only takes a phone call. Then once they wanted me to sign an inappropriate form saying I was doing something I wasn't; which I refused and had them dial up the postmaster. (I don't think they actually called him, just went and re read their own regulations again.)
