The firearms regulations in the U.K. are stringently enforced. A recent case that went to trial in the Staffordshire Crown Court concerned the ownership of an unregistered, old .22 single shot bolt action rifle and 120 approx; rounds of hollow point ammunition[Refered to in the press as dum-dum bullets]Hollow points are not permitted in England except by special permit. The owner was a married man with no previous convictions but was clearly at odds with an animal rights group.Verdict,Guilty, sentence 2 years in prison. To me this seems a very harsh sentence. Yes it is harsh and unreasonable. In the US it is unlikely that a jury would have found for the prosecution. Even if it meant jury nullification. I remember an instance where, in the UK, someone found a rifle in the dustbin and took it to the local police station, instead of ringing the police to fetch it. He was charged. Total idiocy.

I remember in Sewptember of 1966 when I boarded a Piedmont plane in Waterloo,Iowa to Cherry Point, North Carolina and carried my model 12 trap gun with me on the plane and gave the pilot my Ruger Super Blackhawk for safe keeping. Nowadays they would probably have called a swat team on my young ass.

No, but neither your dog nor your firearm were in your luggage. Perhaps you were, but that's another issue.
Your firearm was in a separate package. Gnomon, What does that handle mean? I googled gnomon and it doesnt appear to refer to anything generally pugnacious or obnoxious in nature. Steve

Quote: "Furthermore, we don't have the tradition of owning and using firearms that you have in the US. Until relatively recently, the land and firearms were owned by a relatively small number of wealthy people."
This pretty much sums it up. The leftists union weenies, like the ones rioting in Wisconsin* here, who managed to get fox hunting outlawed because it was a privelege of a few did the same thing with firearms. Fortunately here in the USA many of the firearms owners and users are blue colllar working stiffs like the majority of us. And they will strongly oppose and new firearms regulations. *I just saw it reported that 72% of the rank and file citizeny in Wisconsin STRONGLY oppose the goal of the public service unions. Jim

A "separate package" is STILL luggage, Einstein. I've landed, many times, at many airports, with a gun in my luggage. I will do so again, in the spring, in Spain.
You can't do that at Heathrow. Doesn't matter if it is checked luggage,or, a "separate package", you can't do it.
My Dad's foster father sent two newish Colt autoloaders, a .45 and an Ace to England, on a drive sponsored in St. Paul, MN circa 1940-I wouldn't have minded them back.
Really. I wouldn't have minded one bit.
Who is uninformed now?
Best, Ted

I think some of these accounts of people being prosecuted for taking a gun into the Police Station that they have found are some sort of 'urban myth' that goes the rounds. I spent over 30 years in the British Police Force and such incidents were quite common where guns were brought in. Nobody was prosecuted. Just a couple of questions and a form to fill in as a disclaimer. Most came from houses where a relative had passed away and something along the lines of an old war souvenier would turn up. If it was prohibited for the person to own such as an old Luger pistol it would go for destruction after first contacting a museum such as the Royal Armouries to see if it was an example that interested them. If it was an antique and not subject to control they would be told they could keep it of sell it on if they wish. Sometimes, if it was a family piece and they were not certified to own it in its current form we would arange for a registered Firearms Dealer to collect and de-activate. The Firearms Act 1968 allows for guns that come into public possesssion like this to be handed in at a Police Station or Registered Dealer. just before I retired someone brought in a shotgun he had found, got ti to a Dealer who sold it and the finder had the cash. That is after checks to ensure it was not stolen. Lagopus.....

I recall that they found Spandau arsenal Luger serial #1 and they were going to destroy it and tbe Royal Armoury took it.While I admire much about the British, my dad loved the English,I am put off that the people in control seem to fear the general populace. The years don't seemed to have erased the class distinctions enough.
