Hmmmm.....I'm not even sure what a Lug is.:), though I believe I've been called one more than once!!Hah hah
Never had any bolt action of any kind in my hands,,, ever.
Think I'll look for a cheap Marlin 55 Gooser,...or a Vintage single with a crap bbl..for a sleeve.
Where would I look for a nice action with decent chambers but a hopeless bbl....auctions????...Any sites come to mind for this kinda thing???
Got to be cheap though smile
Thanks lads

I have plenty of rifled shotgun blanks, I bought several when Hastings closed. Just looking for the right action to put them on...Mossberg just doesn't cut it. The Greener may be fun though...

2-Piper, how right you are don't know what I was thinking when I said bolt handle, guess I wasn't. Thanks for correcting my mistake, but I still would not shoot though.

popplecop;
I too would be extremely leery of using one of these, especially with modern SAAMI spec shells. I presume they did pass proof for use with the shells of their day. Obviously that one rear lug in the bridge is not as strong as the two forward ones locking directly into the front receiver ring.
In the shotguns built specifically as bolt actions using the lug as the base of the handle, they were designed with that function in mind. This rear lug on a 98 was not designed as a primary bolt, but simply as a reserve in case of forward failure. In the event the two front lugs began to shear the third would add re-inforcement, but I think it would be totally safe to assume it would never be required to handle the full load of firing in its original design.
Essentially I am in agreement with what you said, except to point out the rear lug was independant & not a part of the handle.

I have two Martini actions that have rifled 12GA ER Shaw barrels. One is a takedown GP Gun with a second shot barrel. The other is a fixed barrel on a Police shotgun action. The Police gun has been fired and it shoots very well. Still making fore ends for both of them, so not much load development yet.

A friend has given me a Greener 14 ga Police gun, he told me that if I rebarreled it to a 12ga slug gun there may be a problem ejecting a spent 2-3/4" shell, not enough clearance. Anyone know more about that?
