Bit of an amateur here so please bear with me. Clearing out an estate, we've run across this 'Field Grade' Ithaca side by side double barrel shotgun with additional barrel. Serial #'s match on every piece and according to Ithaca site this gun dates to 1935. I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to these guns and trying to find out all I can so we can get a fair price for it. I believe it's a 16 or 20 gauge (how do you tell for sure?) and appears to be in fairly good condition; a few small rust spots, nick in checkering, a few small dings on barrel. Any info greatly appreciated, ballpark value would be great. I do have more pictures if needed. Thanks for taking the time to look.

Ogie, It is a 16 ga. field grade gun. Looks to have been sent back to factory for second barrel the one with R on bottom lug.
Both barrels chocked the same 2 and 4 or full and mod, single trigger. Very nice gun looks to be in decent shape according to pic's. Probably worth 1500 to 2500 in my opinion but I could be all wet? Bill

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. A few questions if I may. Others have told me that the sighting beads are ivory, is this true? The shoulder pad is branded Ithaca and I've been told this is an original 'Sunburst' pad, true? Also, where the safety switch slides there is a stamped 'R' and an 'S'. What do these stand for (Safety and ?)? I appreciate the help.

Yes the beads could be ivory, the pad could very well be original especially on a gun with all these other features. Looks like someone had their initials engraved on the trigger guard. A 2 bbl set NID 16 just SOLD on Gunbroker for 655 but no single trigger, no ejectors. Interestingly enough the gun was listed multiple times at 800 with no reserve and didn't sell untill they dropped the price to 400. The condition on this gun looks a little better and this is a newer gun, the former being the "star" model. I would say this gun would top out at 2000, please contact me via e-mail at sireland83@gmail.com should this gun be for sale.

Ogie,,
The safety selector on this gun is also the barrel selector for the trigger. It should have 3 positions, R, S, L. Only the S position is Safe, the others being Right barrel or Left. I have a 20g with this trigger/safety.

Also, the second barrel set appears to be a set fitted after the gun was made. The numbers are of a different font. Im inclined to speculate that they were fitted by Ithaca upon return to the factory. The " R" on the barrel lower protrusion of one set, may be a marking indicating this. But I am only speculating.

If I were in the market for such a gun, I'd pay a lot more than whats been mentioned for this gun, due to the optional single selective trigger, ejectors, and what appears to be a 28" barrel set along with what appears to be 32" barrel set. Not many guns have the options that this one has and still in this condition.

Agree that this is a real nice gun, but not that its value exceeds $2K. Single triggers are not everyone's cup of tea, but this option will catch the eye of those who are into them. Same deal with ejectors. The initials engraved on the triggerguard, while not unattractive, must go to the "negatives" column. The gauge, being less common, is a big plus. Of course additional sets of barrels are always a big draw.

The checkered side panels are unusual, and I'd be interested in others' thoughts on whether this was a factory special order, or what. I would have guessed these barrels to be 26" and 30" and, from a hunter's standpoint, would probably feel compelled to open the chokes to skeet 1 and 2 on the shorter set.

If you're going to auction this gun, most buyers will want to know the dimensions of the stock. Key dimensions are the distance from trigger to center of end of buttpad (likely to be around 14"), and distance from sighting plane to comb and heel (these can be approximated by putting the gun together, setting it upside down on a table with the muzzles and bead hanging off the edge, and measuring the space between the tip of the comb and the table, and the end of the pad and the table ... likely to be around 1.5" and 2.5"). TT

Ogie,
You have a range of value assigned. With a gun like this, it has condition going for it along with the rare features. However, it is a field grade and there are some detractions. My opinion is that it's of enough condition that it could attract some collectors rather than shooters.

With anything slightly rare that's being sold, finding a buyer looking for exactly what you have for sale is the key to maximizing you sale price.
