Gnomon, Sorry, I didn't mean to infer that Southwind, in particular, has any concern about spreaders. Just that some of this forum's members had reservations about spreaders over their own dogs. Still, worth asking if you are going to use them.

Funny, I've hunted South/Southeast Georgia several times. Always carried my Weatherby 12g O/U with light #8 loads and no one ever raised an eyebrow. Wonder if the perception has changed in the last few years, it's been awhile since I've had the opportunity to hunt... Well, most of the "old line plantations" are in SW Georgia near Albany and Thomasville. Its generally the more "traditional" (and usually wild bird) places that have the rules. Many of the preserves that are open the public don't care what you shoot. Though, many do prefer or demand the use of double guns. The restrictions on large bore guns is becoming less and less common. And it should because, if loaded correctly, a 12ga can be just as light or lighter than a 20ga. Here is short video of what Southwind has to offer. They have a beautifully furnished lodge, great food, and gorgeous pinewoods loaded with explosive coveys of bobwhite quail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvCzGRAnLfoAdam

Adam- thanks for posting that video- I am really looking forward to this, especially after a brutal winter - my house is now surrounded by glare ice and I have to wear crampons if I want to go out.
I really do not understand their objection to 12 ga because as you say they can be loaded pretty light.
I wonder if they are concerned about getting hunters who throw up a barrage of ack-ack indiscriminately?
The Orvis recommendation carries a lot of weight with me after experiencing Libby's in Maine. This autumn will be my fifth year there.

I think it's like most things; more about perception than reality. No matter, I wouldn't get hung up on what gauge you're shooting so much as whether or not you shoot the gun you carry well. As we've all heard the saying; "when you're on, you're on". It won't matter a bit to a quail that you hit them with a 12g or a 20g.

I have really been wanting to give ruffed grouse a try. Don't kid yourself there aren't many wild Quail left in the south....why the flushing dog in the video ?

I guess they didn't but you seem to reference wild quail alot...truth is you aren't old enough to have shot a wild Quail. I could hunt wild quail right now if I still had the legs and the dog-power to do it. The population has plummeted here just like in Tennesee, but we still have some around. Nothing like it was up till the '80s in South Ga, but enough for a young gun like Adam to make a go of it. I think you have spoken too quickly and way too harshly about Adam. If he says he shoots wild birds, I'll take his word for it; I've read his posts just like you, and what he says rings true to me...Geo

I often wonder if your a jack@#$ in real life. Guess I'll never know. I reference wild quail alot because I'm wild bird hunter. Maybe your jealous that we still have some wild coveys or maybe its because you no longer have the leg strength to carry you on a wild bird hunt. Either way, I pity you. Not because of the hunting but because I can't imagine somebody with your personality having many friends..... Adam

jOe has obviously fallen prey to the belief that, just because wild bird populations are at all time lows, there aren't ANY huntable wild bird populations left. Fact is, there are still wild birds around, just not as many as the old days. And I will be hunting them day after tomorrow morning. Whassamatter, jOe, no wild quail out where yOu kill five turkeys a day? Some of us can be content to hunt quail all morning and only take one, or two. We may hunt a morning and not find a covey, or we may find two or three coveys.
Just because someone posts "one-liners" doesn't necessarily mean there is any wisdom in them. yOu certainly are a master at insulting the undeserving though, jOe.
