Ken Hurst asked that I post these pics of Doug's work for him. Just as a bystander here, I'm thoroughly impressed. I'm working on a Parker restock job that Doug has coached me on a bit. Boy do I feel humbled when I see his work. [img] [/img] [img] [/img]

Art. No other word for it.
I almost shudder to think what that gun will look like after the bare foot master gets done with it. Even Uncle Dan would say wow.

Doug's work is almost as fine as he is as a man. He is an inspiration. Best, John

Wow. Could Mr. Hurst fill us in on the rest of the details? An incredible piece of wood and a masterful job turning into such a stock! That checkering is just incredible. Look forward to hearing more about this beauty, as well as seeing more pictures!
Alex
P.S. Chuck how is that graft going?

Alex, If you forward me an email asking for these pictures, I will forwad them to you or anyone else interested. I would ask that you enlarge the pic three time life size to really appreciate the unseen quality of this Mann's work. The diamonds are pointed up perfectly ! Thanks Mr. Doug for a great example of your work !! And, Thank you Mr. Chuck for posting for me.
I'll have to do some fancy scratching to match Mr. Dougs work but have some plans. I intend on "closely" copying an Optimus pattern from Bob Elliots book. I hope to improve on the quality of engraving as well as extreme detail in the gold critters. The piece will be dolor cased afterwards by Classic Guns . When pictures are available, I will post. Oh yeah, I always sign the watertable in the event someone thinks I might be trying to counterfit or years from now it is mislabled as original.

Ken, from what pictures I have seen of your work, the gun may well be more valuable in future years than an "original".... Just my opinion, of course. I think your work is absolutely top shelf and only wish I could have a gun engraved by you in my cabinet!

It is inspiring to see this level of craftsmanship. All one needs do is decide what one wants, find a donor/in-the-white gun, save up a war chest, and unleash some fine craftsmen. Beautiful work, Mr. Mann; bet you will do the metal to match, Mr. Ken!!

Oh boy, here we go. I have to spend all day Thursday in airplane with Mr. Mann. Them seats is small enough as it is....
That is indeed truly fine work, and I know from experience that pictures do not do it justice. I just put a Mann stock on a rifle and it redefined my definition of fine stockmaking. You have to hold it in you hands to truly appreciate the quality of the execution and the art of the complete work.
