Wild chukars often flush at 30-40yds., although not always. What load do you use on wild roosters in your .410?

I think they go down pretty hard with the right load.

Chuck:
I agree with the points you make and I have shot, albiet early season,Pheasants with a 410 as well. It always gave me a cetain sense of satisfaction I may add.
I also like all the other gauges and have multiple example in each one. However going back to the opening point of this thread we're blessed IMO to have this as an option of choice. I think the 12ga,and perhaps the 16 ga in certain parts of Europe with continue to be the predominant gauges for as far as I can see into the foreseable future. Hopefully this is a long way out.

To take Mark Twain a little out of context; Me thinks the death reports of the 12ga are somewhat Pre-Mature.

Mark,
I have used Federal and Winchester 11/16 oz #6 successfully and this year I was using the relatively new 3/4 oz. Winchester #6 load out of a 28" Win M-42 full choked gun. Although I haven't measured the choke in this gun, I've heard that they run around .017" choke. It knocked down birds pretty far out with authority. I blocked a corner of a field at the landowners direction. When he asked me to do it, he looked at my gun and had reservations, but then waved me on. After I killed two birds on that corner, he was very surprised.

If I can find them, I may try the 3/4 oz Win load in #5. Pattern density might be starting to get thin enough to make it a wash against the #6 load. Hunting experience will tell.

For the chukar, the #6 load is a solid load.

Weight of a field gun is more important than the gauge. The world is full of overweight small bores. Since I already have a 6lb 6 oz 12ga, why would I carry a small bore that weighs more?

My bow weighs more than some hunting handguns I've owned and almost as much as some light rifles I have. What's that got to do with gauge selection? Shooting small bores is about self imposed limitations just as shooting a bow or muzzleloader is for big game. Weight of the gun is a separate consideration IMO.

12 gauge: carries like a 12; hits like a 12. I can't hit anything with a gun of under 6.5 lb. so what does it matter how light it is and how light it makes you in the wallet? The only small gauges I'm interested in are 16 and 28 and I don't have one of the latter and only a couple of 16s.

Hmmmm, I have a 12 ga. for sale on this BBS. It's just under 6 1/3 lbs on my scale. I'd guess most 16s don't come that light, and many 20s don't either.
