Keeping it simple. I just use a good point and shoot camera, hand held, set on a high resolution (important), and use a combination of ambient light and plain old incandesant bulbs. I normally shut off the flash. Use a good photo editing program (very important). It works and that's about as complex as I want to go. (Williams and Powell, Liverpool, ca. 1875? The scrolls in the engraving are so small they have to be magnified to appreciate.)
