Hello Mal'Missed seeing you at Julia's! Fender & SELF Diddled with "Hems" beat-up old .577. JF's artical will be in Double-Gun Journy'. (It matches my W/R .450 Nitro, with extra .318 Excel.Exp. Bbls).... No mention of Original Chamber length on the JP&S 10 Bore! Would think it "WAS" 2/5.8th" ? or 2./7.8th.? I have an "All Original"here with JP&S letter. C/C.

Hi David, Indeed, Old Ernie's .577 is about as good as it gets!

I won't be at the auction so will see you in the spring.

Purdey 10 bore weighs a bit over 7 pounds, so chambers probably 2-5/8.

Best regards, Mal

Thanks for the "heads up"!

Always check everything at auctions. Very few auctioneers allow returns.

All the best, Mal

I'm pretty sure that gun is MESSED up. My records show that a 10g Purdey with the same serial # had 3 1/2" chambers and was not reproofed. Cabela's had it for a while, one other dealer had it before them.

Here's the original build specs from Purdeys:

Completed November 1883 for Col. A. de Lignieres, the gun later sold to T.
B. Wanamaker.
30" Damascus steel barrels, 2 5/8" chambers, chokes about 1/4 choke both
barrels.
3rd grip to action.
Stock length 15" mid.
Weight of gun 7lbs. 8 3/4 ozs.

Sticking stuff like that in an out-of-the-way auction is a classic was to move bad stuff.

OWD

BTW: it didn't have the case and the goodies when the dealers had it.

Be very interested is seeing how this turns out, lots of what ifs and questions.Has anyone called and asked about a chamber length(and choke?)?There might be a member nearby who might take a ride over and see, they might even have some dealer as a transfer agent who could get a gauge.

You never know what games are played by bidders and auctioneers, only one way to tell.Nice case and accessories but not worth 10 large, you need to be sure about what goes in it.

So Dave, what do you think of the original build specs ? I have seen the gun, and Obsessed has info on it, or do you think we are playing games as you say ? What do you know about the gun? I , and others, would be very interested.

So Daryl,

I said you need to check the gun to be sure and have said so since the begining !You don't know if its the same gun until you check it.

If anyone goes, let us know how Purdey looks like, most important,as Mal says the barrels !Goodness know the auctioneer has no clue,he couldn't spell Purdey correctly when every thing in the case has it on it !

Whats your problem? You said you "might" know the gun, maybe you should chose your words a bit better pal and read the posts before you start that crap!
Now who's playing games the guy who says check the barrels ro the one who says don't bother cause it "might' be a gun I know ?

Gentlemen, Did "WE" view the serial# when looking at the gun? There is only 1 Purdey with that Sr.#. I might suggest that a"Serious Punter",(Before writing the cheque for the gun)hire the services of a "Qualified Gunsmith" to have a Cerrosafe' casting made of each of the chambers, and go forward of the forceing-cone at least 1/2" into the bore. To use a "Quote" from a old Purdey Barrel-Maker,"Its easy to remove steel from a Barrel, or a chamber but much harder to put it back in" !! C/C

Dave, sorry, I took it as you thought I might be a bidder playing games. Not so.

As I thought , yesterday, the gun was previously owned by a friend two or three years ago. At that time it had chambers over 3 1/4" and had an unshootable pitch. He had the pitch changed and the pad added. Later sold it to Cabelas. It is a very pretty gun, but with a problem or two. My friend looked at the listing and said the listed weight was not quite right, too. I have not looked back at that in the ad.
