I'm (well) over 40 and have always shot SxSs but do see fewer amongst younger shooters.
But I think that has to do with changing cultural values - if a decent SxS costs 5K that will rule out many newcomers to the sport. Many of these newcomers are not the people who spend that much on golf clubs - and the guys who spend that much on golf clubs don't shoot. Shooting is less fashionable and, in this country, has become more downmarket.
There still is a vibrant trade in the real high-end doubleguns. But those things sell into a market that is sort of outside general market trends.
It is curious that people who buy a 40K truck will drive it thru mud and sleet and park it in a Walmart parking lot but won't take a 5K gun into the field.
