The way it worked then was, you buy your air time and get your sponsors together. If you can't put enough sponsors togther to make a profit, you go out of business.
Dick is right on how it works.
I am a regular hunting partner/friend of Harley Jackson, host of American Gun Dog. I have participated in two episodes in the past. This show has been sponsored by Benelli, Toyota, Delorme GPS, etc. They started on ESPN whom regulated the number of bird kills allowed per show, and switched networks to the Outdoor Channel. Getting ongoing funds from the sponsor companies is very tough. AGD has been filming shows again this year, although there were none done last. Fischer Productions has done a number of different outdoor shows, Offshore Adventures fishing, free diving, Great White shark on Nat. Geo channnel, etc.. American Gun Dog has the toughest time getting sponsors on board of the group that they produce.
Let's face it, there are far fewer of us than bass guys, deer hunters, and cage fight fans. Cabelas and GunBroker both support cage fighters. The advertising dollars go to the group with the audience.
