I'm in NYC for the day and would like to drool over fine guns this evening somewhere in Manhattan. Can anyone recommend any gun rooms to check out?
The only one I know about is the Beretta Gallery. Are there better/others?

Holland & Holland 10 East 40th Street Suite 1910 New York, NY 10016
Tel: (212) 752-7755
And that's about it besides Beretta. If you had enough time for a 2 hour drive you have G&H in NJ & CT, Safari Outfitters & British Sporting Arms in Millbrook.

Do not neglect to visit the armory at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. They have an outstanding collection of early firearms up to a Winchester 1894 with engraving and other decoration by Tiffany & Company. There are also some fine percussion Colts and mid-19th Century percussion double barreled shotguns. The Museum's collection dates back to the days when gentlemen & ladies of aesthetic discernment in New York City were also shooters.

G&H used to have an office on W 44th diagonally opposite the Algonquin but alas, no longer. There is frequent commuter rail from Grand Central to Greenwich CT where G&H have a pretty decent gun room. I don't think you can get to their Jersey location by public.

I don't think you can get to their Jersey location by public. You can take a regular commuter train (Amtrak?) from NYC to Bernardsville, about a block away from G&H. check where it leaves from (Penn Station or ??) and whether it is a direct route or you have to transfer trains midway. There are a couple decent restaurants within walking distance.

Update:
I was able to make it to the Beretta Gallery in Midtown last night just before closing. The beauty and romance of the place faded quickly. They had as many standard off the rack guns as any Cabelas or other mass merchandiser. No consignment or vintage guns. Every single gun in the entire store had a 14 5/8" length of pull. When I asked how I could get a longer LOP gun I was told it was only offered on $100k plus guns with a 2 year wait.
I regret I didn't have the time to visit G&H and H&H while I was here. I'll be heading to both next month when I return.

The gun room at the Beretta Gallery in NYC has always disappointed me. However, their clothing is very good and very reasonably priced. Nice European styles. Unfortunately their shirts and tweed jackets are too short for me sleevewise, but I have gotten a nice woolen greatcoat and some other stuff. Nice moleskin trousers, a good tweed vest.
I have a bad feeling that Beretta in NYC sell a lot of expensive, heavily decorated sideplated guns to people who don't know any better. Their London operation is a bit better. I think they get a more knowledgeable crowd there.
Good to know about the G&H public transport option- thank you. It would be Penn Station if it's Amtrak.

I have seen advertisements in Shooting Sportsmen and Double Gun Journal for Holland & Holland New York. Looked like it was priced way out of my league, from the way the people in pictures were dressed. Beretta Gallery used to be located in Old Towne, Alexandria, Va. on the main drag in some old house. I used to go in there and drool all over their guns (double barrel rifles, shotguns, and pistols). They had a room for rejects. Couldn't prove it by me. I remember looking at their clothes and books. For the most part, what they had was priced out of my league, but the people were always nice. They closed up a few years ago and moved to Dallas. Pity. I guess there are more people out there who appreciate nice guns than here, in Northern Virginia.
