It seems to me (i.e. non-expert opinion) that in this case, the 3 inch turkey load may well have contributed to a failure of a flawed barrel. The whole point of a 3 inch shell is to cram more shot in the shell, which needs a heavy charge of slow burning powder to achieve usable velocity at a chamber pressure of no more than 11,500 psi, which in turn means higher pressures at any point further down the barrel than a 2 3/4 load.
