It seems to me (i.e. non-expert opinion) that in this case, the 3 inch turkey load may well have contributed to a failure of a flawed barrel. The whole point of a 3 inch shell is to cram more shot in the shell, which needs a heavy charge of slow burning powder to achieve usable velocity at a chamber pressure of no more than 11,500 psi, which in turn means higher pressures at any point further down the barrel than a 2 3/4 load.

I agree. There's more energy in a 3" shell. It either has to push harder (more pressure) for the same length of time or as hard for longer period of time. I'm of the belief that many average target and field loads are well below max SAAMI pressures also. A quick look in any loading manual will support that. That barrel does look pretty thin in the pics.

I believe we've concluded here, based on tests conducted by Bell and earlier by, I believe, Dupont, that peak pressure is always going to be reached within a couple inches of the breech face. That's going to be true with smokeless, black, fast-burning, slow-burning, whatever. Pressure will have dropped significantly that far down the barrel. Bell ran comparison tests using both black and smokeless. One load, using 36 grains of Blue Dot, produced a pressure of only 3,000 psi at 9" from the breech, which is about where this failure appears to have occurred.

Larry, I sold that Darne with its 10 lb trigger pull to Cabelas.
It was a horrible gun but it paid for that trip to Flatwater that year!

Pitypat,

More importantly, how is your friend's recovery? Did the surgeons save his finger?

Yes, it was the tip of a middle finger and it is going to be OK.
Years ago, I guess they would have just put in a jar for him to look at.

Thanks again for all the help
