My friend was shooting last Saturday some Winchester 3 in Turkey loads in a Turkish made TRI STAR 12 GA. O&U, as you can see it blew up and he temporally lost the tip of his finger. He did not find the forearm,as he was near or in water. He said definitely no 20 gauge shell in barell. What do you think and where should he send it to get it checked. It was marked 2 3/4 or 3 in shells

Thanks in advance

Pat

Boy I like to know what the barrel wall thickness is... was on them barrels. Look a little thin for that area.

I myself compaired them to other 12 ga guns and they look 1/2 as thick. The person that shot it paid $400 for the gun and had shot it a lot last year.

How did a thing like that pass the rigid Turkish government proof house?

What a shame we live in a nation with no proof laws. People buy a gun and think anything wallyworld sells can be fed to the beast.

Just because a gun has been reamed for 3" or 3.5" shells doesnt mean it is stronger. It only means more material has been removed from the barrel at the factory.

I'm glad your friend is okay, but he was unwise to put a max charge in a low quality gun.

Tell him I have a Damascus barreled 1880s sidelock reproved for 3" shells that will function just like that Turk. Glad to sell it to him. Won't cost an arm and a leg, only a few fingers.

The wall does look thin, but on the other hand the shape of the opening could indicate an obstruction initiated failure - IMHO of course. - Jani

The SAAMI pressure standard for 2 3/4" and 3" 12ga is the same: 11,500 psi. So the fact it was a 3" shell should not have made any difference. And where that rupture took place--in front of the forend lug--the longer chamber would not have been a factor.

I'm NOT entirely convinced proof laws would have saved anything, in this case. I also believe Jani is on the right track with an obstruction, maybe a base wad from a previous cartridge.
