The whole affair concerning the WBTS would not be nearly so polarizing in the Deep South today had it not been for Sherman. The atrocities committed by men under his charge will be remembered by the abused families for generations to come, my wife's family included. One of her great aunts was gang-raped by Sherman's troops, and went insane from the shame and trauma. There certainly were abuses and wrongs committed by both sides, but Sherman will forever be remembered in Georgia as cruel and evil, the antithesis of Lee and Jackson.
