Yamamoto just happened to be in Italy when the British whalloped the Italian navy in Taranto harbour; they refused to come out to play after that, that gave him the idea for Pearl Harbour. But in the spirit of British fair play the Italians had declared war on us first. http://www.suite101.com/content/the-battle-of-taranto---inspiration-for-pearl-harbour-a307392 Lagopus..... Having done some study on your civil war I never could understand how the south lost as they semed to outclass the union at every turn; except the one that counted.

If it wasnt for the British and their steam catapult the aircraft carrier would be a thing of the past.
With the maneuvers Lee was pulling off as in splitting his army time and time again in order to cross major rivers and flank the Northern armies, it is puzzling as to why the South lost. However with industry playing a bigger and bigger part in warfare it wasnt why the South lost but it is a tribute to their armies and the genius and quality of their officers that they were able to last as long as they did.

The next invasion is not going to be boatloads of infantry coming on shore. Some crafty bad guys with some know how and a good internet connection can bring this country to its knees by attacking our financial and power/energy infrastructure on the net. Its all run by computer. Take that out and watch us wallow in confusion and misery. We wont be able to move goods, get gas or buy food via credit/debit and what not. The plastic will be useless and even more so meaningless if the electronic system goes down. This has has been a national security concern for some time but no will power to tackle it.
But still its good to know that hunter numbers and at least being sustained.
BTW, there is at one Yankee regiment that should still strike fear into the hearts of our brave Southern brothers...20th Maine under Chamberlain.

Lagopus, the south never had a chance from the start. But it certainly didn't appear plain to them in the early phases. They were sparsely populated and had little manufacturing ability. To them the war was an "all or nothing" affair. They also lacked a general consensus among the population for support of the war. In the beginning it does seem people rallied to defend their soverign state's rights. But as the rebellion devolved into a question of slavery the support seems to have become somewhat confused. And each state, proud of its soverignity, was slow to fully engage itself for the entire confederacy. At the same time, the northern states had a vast excess of manufacturing and agriculture. During all those years it never had to go into full wartime production, but the war was more of a major diversion. Overall, popular support for the goals continued more or less. Just consider this one illustration: during the war the north was able to begin constructing the transcontinental railroad (1863), which required huge quanities of iron and other materials and contributed nothing to the war effort. The south couldn't even repair their own rails!
The whole sad affair reminds me of a beggar playing poker with a billionaire without table limits.
John McCain is my war hero.

Lagopus, there's some similarity with the American Revolution: the side that won the most battles ended up losing the war. Of course in the case of our Revolutionary War, it was the big economic and industrial power that lost.

I will have to agree with Geo on this concerning the battles fought between the the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac. When you travel west the difference in casualties gets a lot closer. If you study the official records and Battles and Leaders where casualties are listed, casualties are broken down only by regiment and not brigade, you can see the difference and you have to conclude that the Southern regiments consistantly shot to pieces the Northern regiments, regardless of whether they were strictly defensive or offensive actions. well, look at the actual casualty figures and you will see that disease/infection killed far more than bullets

The whole affair concerning the WBTS would not be nearly so polarizing in the Deep South today had it not been for Sherman. The atrocities committed by men under his charge will be remembered by the abused families for generations to come, my wife's family included. One of her great aunts was gang-raped by Sherman's troops, and went insane from the shame and trauma. There certainly were abuses and wrongs committed by both sides, but Sherman will forever be remembered in Georgia as cruel and evil, the antithesis of Lee and Jackson.

Sad to say but Pennsylvania's army of hunters would have a hard time sustaining themselves if food supplies stopped moving due to a cyber attack. Our Game Commission has decimated the deer herd with its' "Exterminate the deer management policy" Maybe the PGC has been infiltrated by Chinese or radical Muslim terrorists as a preliminary move to neutralize our army of hunters.
