I've seen both, so my rule of thumb is when in doubt, treat them as soldered. The difference between costs on hot tanking vs. rust blueing isn't worth ruining a set of barrels. Besides, I prefer the rust blued or hand blacked look.

Spellcheck is a great & marvelous invention. Its only problem is it can't read a mind. It will therefore let you put in a wrong word, just so long as you spell that "Wrong" word "Right".

Sorry about the braised instead of brazed! And to think that I've been published in Gray's Sporting Journal 32 times makes my error even more blaring. Chops, now at 74 yrs. of loving s/s and vintage pump guns.

My 3 BSS guns are soldered as was a friends that fell apart after his wife had an unqualified smith hot blue his. Easiest place to check is at the muzzles. Solder will be gray, braze will be gold.

Even brazed barrel often have the nose end "tinned" up to fill any gaps and to dress the ends.
