Thanks, Steve. That opens up a whole new direction of inquiry when I'm looking to match wood on a plain gun with a missing butt or forend, or just looking for plain, stable wood for a hunting gun.
Hmmmm, wonder when I can sneak away to up to Chico area again....somebody up there has to actually SUPPLY those retailers!

Or go to the land owner and buy a tree and have a portable bandsaw mill operator saw it up for you. That's how I started in the wood business. I used to find a walnut tree, buy it,saw it down and haul it to a mill on a hay wagon running gear made from a model A Ford.Probably why I have a bad back. Damn, that was hard work! Trees with problems can still have a lot of good wood and they are avoided by the big time buyers so they are cheap.

Unfortunately I'm 68 and don't have the years needed to turn a tree into stocks, nor the rig. So I'm gonna have to rely on somebody elses' back, and their kiln. (My back is already ruined, anyway....partly from planting trees, not cutting 'em.).

rusticmill.com In Idaho. He falls trees, saw mills, and has a few blanks for sale, and a lot of furniture wood. Some of the blanks on his website are fairly plain. I have purchased a few from him. Call him, not all of his blanks are shown on the site.
Look at the page with the walnut table slabs (he marks it as lumber on his index). Some of it looks pretty good for use as a semi plain stock blank.

Look at this one: http://www.specialtreesindustries.com/proddetail.php?prod=EW08You should check out his other blanks also. specialtreesindustries.com He says no export, but if you cannot find something in your area maybe I can help, if shipping to OZ is not too complicated. Special Trees is only about an hour drive from me, I sometimes drive there to buy a blank.

Thanks guys for being so helpful, I have looked at a lot of blanks now from the folks you referred me too. The upshot is that I have seen some very nice wood, but nothing that to my eye matches.
I also called and have now gotten a reply from Roger Vardy and some pictures of his blanks.
I am still confused, almost all of the blanks I have seen have significant streaking, whereas in the Model B's I can view, there is none to very little. Is this me seeing things (not reading either the pictures of the blanks correctly, or indeed the stocks I have) or is the walnut different ??
If someone would like to help further I can forward My Vardy's email with photos the blanks he suggested (after a detailed discussion) - all that I think look quite different to the rifle I have !!
Cheers - Foster

Hello Foster, I found this guy on ebay in the US, advertised a lot of quarter sawn straight grain walnut. I have not used him but it looks intresting, maybe a forum member from NC might know about him. www.gunville.comBob

Well Today I finally got ahold of Geoff Slee who has a Kurz pattern and he will turn a stock on a blank that he has - I'm trusting to his judgemnt as he as seen more Model B's than a lot of folk (especially me) and he has limited time.
I'll report on the result. Cheers - Foster

RJH, What do you want to know about Gunville? They sell on eBay. I contacted them, and they offered me a tour of their facilities. Hopefully, I will get an opportunity to look at their operation soon. NCTarheel

NC Their numerous Mauser sporter patterns seemed intresting.Let us know what you think of the inletting. I'm on the lookout for a Original Mauser Commercial pre-war type stock, model A or B for a small ring intermediate length Mex Mauser. Thought I'd spend the asking price on ebay to see how their quality was. The G&H type 03 Springfield stock also looked good. Thanks for your help. Bob
