George, what lake was this? Banks Lake?
Nah, it was Ocean Pond, about a 1,400 acre lake including the substantial marsh located down near the Florida line. It's a private club owned by a few 3rd or 4th generation members. Shares trade now and then. I bought a share 30 years ago, but my Grandfather had shares, so I've duck hunted and fished on the lake all my life.
It was started back in the late 1800s and accessed then by the members who came by rail to the town of Lake Park which borders part of the lake, and then by a steam launch over to what they called 'Paradise Island' where the present clubhouse was built in 1904. When I was little they still had 'boat paddlers' who lived with their families in 'shotgun houses' on the premises.
A good friend of mine used to scuba dive the lake and he found the wreck of the steamer on the bottom. We still have the anchor and flywheel in the yard at the clubhouse.
