Salvageable, but at what price? High bid is already at $3670 with ten days remaining.

IMHO... Overpriced for its' current condition, it will "really" be overpriced when restored! There are much better guns out there you don't have to put a cent in! I bought a beautiful Niedner Rifle Corp./Shellhamer 7x57 stocked in 1939 in xxxx French Walnut [100% marblecaking figure in the butt] on a commercial Oberndorf barrelled action a year ago in overall 90+ condition complete with a M7 Leupold 4x [I swapped it out for a 4x Noske] including shipping and insurance for $2500. Swiss file checkering throughout the metalwork, hinged floorplate/triggerguard with Oberndorf bow release and Winchester Supergrade Swivels. Bore shot very, very little...a gun cabinet rifle. You just have to look...every day! Jerry

What would it need besides a sight and the holes in the action plugged?
It looks pretty nice to me, what am I missing?

Ol' Jack sure does attract the bidders, eh?

It's just a matter of simple economics...nothing done by some, a complete refinish by others. The good news is since you consider it ready to drive off the showroom floor, there is still plenty of time to bid. Also you have the option of doing all the work yourself and that is a big plus in your favor, and making the gun's cost more attractive to you. Not so attractive to the rest of us in the retail side of the business. JFL

Shelhamer/Niedner 7x57's mausers are a dime a dozen compared to this rifle. Kurz action, great caliber, terrific engraving, handsome lines, unusual checkering pattern for a Shelhamer, and no serious issues. Sure, you need to fix the bolt and add the Lyman 48, but the clip guide has not been removed, the stock has not been shortened and does not appear to have any cracks or splits. Honest wear on the stock and checkering does not bother me to much on these rifles. I just hope to get a chance to see it if it does get restored correctly.

Monte Mandarino is still high bidder on this rifle at $3670, tomorrow is where the rubber meets the road on the debate regarding this rifle.I'll be watching but not bidding,I'm more likely to bid on the absolute mint Win. Model 54 he's high on at $890 on Auction Arms. We'll see.

Final bid $5840. It is said "Something is only -worth- what someone will pay for it"...I think it is better to say..."Something only -cost- what someone will pay for it" Anyone who thinks this rifle is worth $3340 more than the Niedner 7x57 I described, had better have plenty of money to spend/waste. The only thing I can see that is even special about the rifle is the Kurz action and the engraving. The Fleur de Lis checkering and the chambering is no big deal as Niedner's go. However one man's trash is another man's treasure, and to each his own.
