The weight of a gun is really a personal thing. I know someone that carries a 7 1/2 lb .410 sxs. That's what he shoots well. If he had a 5 lb gun, he probably couldn't hit much and what good would carrying a gun be if you can't hit what you intend?
Personally, I find a gun (410) just at or an ounce or two under 6lbs to work well for me now. My 5 1/2 lb 28g Repro is a bit light, but I'm getting used to it. It takes baby steps for me.

The problem with M/F on Repro 28's, for those who haven't stuck a bore and choke gauge in the barrels, is that they are indeed M/F constriction . . . for a 12ga. They're ridiculous for a 28ga.

Larry...Larry...Larry, Dog-gone-it---DON'T MAKE ME COME UP THERE!
You keep regurgitating this same misinformation time after time after time. You insinuate that the 28-ga. Repro M/F chokes have constrictions that make them useless....and that my friend---just ain't true. I have 28-ga. Repros with Q1/Q2, IC/M and M/F choke designations. Guess which which set of bbls. I consistently score better with on the sporting clays and 5-stand courses I usually shoot? That's right---the M/F set. You really need to get out there and shoot them rather than diddling with some gauges--you'll be enlightened!

You keep regurgitating this same misinformation time after time after time. Our friend, Larry, is very good at that then it comes the Kodensha built guns.

I bought one of the 28 Ga 28" barrel st grip double triggers the first day I got the flyer from Jaques. Had it restocked in French walnut and the chokes opened to 1/c i/m. Should be the perfect dove gun but it has never shot as well as my old W&C 728 with 25" barrels. Had Mike Orlen bend the stock but it has never been quite right. Maybe I need to practice more with it. Two many guns, too little time.

Tyler, Put some mag wheel tape weights under the barrels ahead of the forend and shoot some skeet with it. I think about 2-3 ounces will really change it out there. Then you can figure out what you're gonna do permanently.

You really need to get out there and shoot them rather than diddling with some gauges--you'll be enlightened! Wild Skies, here are the facts on those M/F Repro 28's: I bought a 2 barrel set back about 3 years ago. 26" Q1 & 2. Actual constrictions, as measured: 007/011--pretty much IC/M in a 28. Not so bad, just a little tight for what's marked. 28" M/F. Actual constrictions, as measured: .019/.038. Those darned Japs musta thought they were choking a 12ga--and for that matter, even most 12's are more open than that these days for M/F. That's full in the right and nuts in the left for a 28ga. How you shoot yours . . . well, have you ever measured the chokes? Maybe some sane person had them opened. Or maybe you just happen to shoot really tight chokes really well. And the above M/F barrels were not a fluke. Purchased a Repro 28, unfired, with 28" M/F barrels the previous year. The mod was exactly the same: .019. On that one, I couldn't get my gauge into the F barrel. And in spite of Don's comment, I actually like Repros--a lot. (Especially those with the proper number of triggers: 2!) And the constrictions on the 12's and 20's, of which I've owned several each, are right about where they should be. I have no idea who went nuts on choking those 28's, but using 12ga constrictions for 28ga chokes is REALLY dumb. And I'm an equal opportunity basher when it comes to something like that. I'd say the same thing if I found those chokes in a Stevens or an AyA or a Purdey. Dumb is dumb, and it's possible to find dumb even if the gun does happen to say Winchester. And by the way . . . that very first 28ga Repro I bought, the one that came choked 12ga M/F . . . I had the chokes opened to .005/.010. Had an assignment that gave me a chance to shoot a whole bunch of preserve pheasants. Loaded up a bunch of 3/4 oz 7's, thought I'd see how a 28 would work. Missed the very first bird I shot at, then proceeded to kill the next 27 straight, including a couple doubles. So if you don't shoot the ones with open chokes well . . . maybe you ought to send them to me.

Larry, My original unaltered 28-ga. Repro chokes, carefully miked by a professional using a professional bore gauge is as follows:
Q1/Q2 = .004/.008 IC/M = .006/.016 M/F = .014/.034
We all know that actual constriction doesn't tell the whole story, you have to actually do some empirical pattern testing with various loads to determine what kind of patterns your particular gun shoots, right? In your post above you never admitted that you actually shot your M/F choked barrels to determine effectiveness. It would also seem that either:
a) The chokes on your guns were mismarked. b) You used inferior equipment to measure the chokes. -or- c) Operator error in measuring the chokes.
...and since you weren't able to even get the gauge into the barrels to measure them, it leads us to come to only one conclusion.

My Reproduction 28 gauge M/F measures 0.020" and 0.038". I use a Skeet's bore gauge. I do all right with the gun on wild Bobwhites though. If I was subsistence hunting I would have the chokes opened.
As I am taking the difference between the two measurements to get choke I think they are accurate readings. I have less confidence in my bore measurements, 0.554" and 0.555"
Best,
Mike
